Campers refueled and cooled down at lunch with pizza, chicken hoagies, sweet potato fries, and brownies.
After lunch, three-on-three and free throw competitions began on the three main courts of Kirby, while team play continued in Gammon Gym. A few Farmville rain showers, which shut down the baseball camp for about an hour, brought an unexpected 300 fans inside Gammon to watch the game. "That was crazy," said one Pinehurst eleven-year-old that hit several great shots. With every play, the baseball players were really cheering for the kids.
On the outside court, the younger players were making their own shots in a shirts and skins competition coached by Coach Lumpkin and Coach King. The game came down to a sudden death overtime with a game winning shot by one happy Raleigh camper.
After dinner, campers had extended free-time in the dorms while we waited for a thunderstorm to pass. But, that didn't slow down the fun. The camp store was the place to be and quickly sold out of Mike and Ikes and Laffy Taffys.
All that candy led to a high octane game of dodgeball that included campers and counselors, young and old. It was hard to tell the grown ups from the kids!
All is well at Hampden-Sydney Basketball Camp.
