After check in and a quick meal Friday night, campers wasted no time getting to Kirby Fieldhouse where our staff was ready to put them to the test in ball handling, rebounding, shooting, passing and fast break stations. The evening ended in free play and a huge game of Knock Out that included campers and counselors. Rumors are floating that counselors (and H-SC basketball teammates) Leon Hargrove and JaVonte Reddick are going to have a dunk contest soon. Back at the dorm, the camp store was a popular spot for campers where lots of pizza, Gatorade, and Twizzlers were consumed. A special thanks goes out to the Raleigh campers for providing the music!
On Saturday morning, campers were back at it after a good night’s rest. Station rotations and one-on-one instruction from our coaches filled the first part of the day. The youngest campers went up to Gammon Gymnasium for a session with Coach Vick and some 3-on-3 play. After working up a pretty good sweat, counselors Mitch Owens and Jake Duncan led them in a foam roller session in the team locker room to stretch out their tired muscles, which reportedly turned into a sword fight.
Meanwhile, our older ballers were working hard to take their skills and conditioning to the next level. Coach Tyler Sanborn kept the energy high and the drills moving. Missed lay ups meant push ups and sprints. The morning session ended with 5-on-5 play where teams rotated courts hoping to land in the championship game. It came down to a close competition between two evenly matched teams. One Pinehurst, NC camper was the difference-maker, swishing a step back three-pointer for the win.
